FAQ
Q : Which companies are eligible for SR&ED?
A : Most industries and companies in Canada that conduct research and development activities, such as technology development or process improvement, can be eligible for SR&ED. Not only Canadian companies but also Korean companies operating in Canada can be eligible, and applications are open to a wide range of businesses, from large corporations to small and medium-sized enterprises.
Q : What types of expenditures are eligible for support?
A : R&D labor costs, material costs, and outsourced R&D expenses are the primary targets. It is important whether the costs are directly linked to project execution and whether there are records to support this.
Q : Which activities are eligible for SR&ED?
A : Systematic experimentation and development activities aimed at resolving technical uncertainties can be eligible. Examples include prototype development, algorithm development, process improvement, and performance verification.
Q : Are there any costs if we do not receive the funding?
A : SREDX operates on a performance-based (contingency fee) structure to minimize the financial burden on our clients. In other words, fees are only incurred if you actually receive the government funding, and no costs are charged if the funding is not received. Therefore, you can proceed with the SR&ED application without any financial risk.
Q : Can we apply for SR&ED for products that have already been commercialized?
A : It is difficult with simple production or just adding features, but if experiments and development were involved to improve performance or resolve technical limitations, there is a possibility to apply. The key is whether there was a process of gaining new technical knowledge or a problem-solving process.
